Jean Ehn Spirit of Excellence Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Iowa Cheerleading Coaches' Association
Introduction
This award was established to honor high school cheerleaders who demonstrate servant leadership and the ability to positively impact others. Candidates are evaluated on qualities described in their essay and recommendation letters — characteristics that indicate they can persevere through challenges, support others’ success, and lead with integrity.
Award Summary and Eligibility
- One recipient will receive a single, non-renewable scholarship of $500 for the graduating class of the current school year.
- The applicant’s cheer coach must be a current member of the ICCA.
- The applicant must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 at the end of junior year (do not round grades up to reach 3.25).
- Applicants must comply with all scholarship directions.
- All materials must be completed on white paper using dark ink or print.
- Applicants may apply for both the Jeanne Ehn Spirit of Excellence Scholarship and the ICCA Academic Scholarship, but a candidate may not be awarded both scholarships.
Application requirements (follow exactly)
- Completed basic scholarship application form that includes the coach’s signature. Send one (1) copy of this form.
- One (1) page listing all high school, community, and religious activities with the grade level(s) for each (9th, 10th, 11th, 12th). Distinguish between SQUAD community service and INDIVIDUAL community service. Note any honors related to community service. This list must be verified by the cheer coach’s signature. Send three (3) copies.
- One (1) page essay addressing the prompt: “What I have gained from being involved in community service and how it has made me a better cheerleader and person.” Send three (3) copies.
- Two (2) one-page letters of recommendation — one from the person who oversees the community service activities and one from a school administrator or teacher. Note: a cheer coach’s recommendation is acceptable only if that coach also has a direct role in community service activities (for example, serving as a 4-H leader or NHS sponsor). Recommendation letters should describe the applicant outside of cheerleading, including responsibility, leadership, contributions to team and/or school spirit, and other distinguishing qualities. Send three (3) copies of each recommendation letter.
- A letter from the high school guidance counselor that states the applicant’s cumulative GPA through the end of junior year. This letter must be signed by both the guidance counselor and the principal. This guidance letter is not considered a recommendation and official transcripts should not be submitted.
