Mary Benevento Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Connecticut Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance
Intro
This scholarship is available to students in the graduating class of a high school or preparatory school who are United States citizens and residents of Connecticut, and who intend to pursue professional studies leading to a Bachelor’s degree at a Connecticut college or university. Eligible fields are health education (specifically school health teaching—not nursing, public health, or psychology), physical education, recreation, or dance. Both male and female graduating students may apply.
Eligibility
- Must be in the graduating class of a high school or preparatory school.
- Must be a United States citizen and a resident of the State of Connecticut.
- Must plan to enroll in a certified Bachelor’s degree program at a Connecticut collegiate institution in one of these areas: school health teaching (school health only), physical education, recreation, or dance.
Selection Criteria
Applicants will be evaluated on demonstrated scholarship, competence, promise for success in the chosen profession, and overall worthiness.
Application requirements
Submit the following materials:
- A copy of the student’s academic transcript.
- A personal statement (maximum 300 words) describing your educational objectives and explaining why you are qualified for the scholarship. This statement should also summarize your in-school and extracurricular activities and accomplishments.
- A letter of recommendation from a teacher, guidance counselor, or an adult advisor involved with an activity in which you participate.
- Please avoid submitting duplicate reports of the same accomplishments.
Award and disbursement
Scholarships are issued as certificates contingent upon the student’s enrollment in an undergraduate program at an accredited college or university. After the scholarship committee receives official confirmation of enrollment from the appropriate college or university officials, CTAHPERD will send a check for $1,000 (disbursed as $500 for each of two semesters) to the institution to establish a credit in the student’s account. Funds may be used for tuition, books, or room and board.
Conditions and revocation
Any unused credit may be revoked if the student’s conduct is inconsistent with the college or university’s standards of law, order, and morality. Unused credit will also be withdrawn if the student transfers and is no longer majoring in one of the four eligible fields listed above.
