SUVCW Scholarships
Scholarship Sponsored by Sons on Union Veterans of the Civil War
Overview / Eligibility
The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War awards two scholarships each year, each valued at $2,500, to help cover tuition and books. These scholarships are open to high school seniors and current college students of any gender. Recipients must be enrolled at an accredited four‑year college or university on or before December 31 of the year the award is made.
Application checklist
1. Show a history of achievement in both academics and community involvement.
2. References should attest to the applicant’s sincere interest in and a positive attitude toward college study.
3. Complete the fillable application form, then print, sign, and date it. Submit only pages 3, 4, and 5 of the form. Handwritten applications will not be accepted.
4. Membership documentation:
- Male applicants: include a photocopy of your current SUVCW membership card indicating you are a Member or Associate.
- Female applicants: include a photocopy of a current membership card demonstrating you are a Member or Associate of at least one Allied Order (Woman’s Relief Corps — WRC; Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic — LGAR; Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861–1865 — DUVCW; or Auxiliary to SUVCW — ASUVCW). In addition, female applicants must be the daughter or granddaughter of a living SUVCW Member or Associate at the time of application.
5. Transcripts: provide an official transcript of your high school and/or college grades in a sealed envelope. The envelope must be countersigned across the flap by the school registrar (or equivalent) or bear the school seal.
6. Recommendations: supply three letters of recommendation from people who know you well: one from a school counselor (or equivalent), one from a teacher of an academic subject, and one from a responsible community member. Each recommendation must be submitted in its own sealed envelope and must be countersigned across the flap by the person who wrote the letter.
