The Robert B. and Sophia Whiteside Scholarship Fund awards scholarships to graduating seniors of Duluth high schools who show academic excellence, high character, leadership and promise to contribute to their communities.

Marion Whiteside Meining established the scholarship in memory of her parents, Robert and Sophia Whiteside. Robert Whiteside was a pioneer Duluth lumberman and mining executive active in forming the City of Duluth.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be high school seniors graduating from Duluth schools (including home schools)
  • Show high academic performance. Each school will identify students who qualify. Counselors will provide students with an application code.  
  • Seeking admission to an accredited, degree-granting, four-year college or university. Applicants also must provide a transcript including fall grades.
  • Demonstrate good character. 

Scholarship Grant Range

$5,000 a year up to 4 years ($20,000 total)

Application timeline

  • Students who qualify will receive an application code from their counselors.
  • This scholarship is part of the Universal Application: December 1 – February 13
  • ONE Universal Application: Create a profile in the scholarship portal. Fill out the first page of the universal application to filter through all of the scholarships you qualify for.

Award Details

  • This scholarship may be used for expenses of post-secondary education at any accredited college, university or technical/ vocational school
  • Award Payments will be mailed directly to the school/ university
    • Fall Payments are mailed July 15-30
    • Spring Payments are mailed December 15-30
  • Transferring Schools: Please contact DSACF if you plan on transferring schools. Transferring schools does not automatically transfer your scholarship. If a transfer occurs after scholarship money has been disbursed it may take up to 90 days to reprocess the scholarship payment.
